Vibration 1950 Streamliner
#1
I have a 1950 streamliner 6 cylinder standard transmission, the left rear motor mount was bad so, I replace all 3 mounts figuring it was the right thing to do.  Now I have a vibration that I never had before.  I added some rubber under the rear mounts its better but you can feel it in the steering column and turn signal switch handle.  Any clues

Thanks

If it started this after the mounts were changed, I would suspect something is possibly in a bind somewhere. When you replaced the mounts did you do the front or rear first? The rear mounts center the engine and should be tightened first with the weight off the front mount.

Hi Dave, I did the front first and than the rear,  when I took the front out a metal plate came out with it, does it matter which way it goes back in?

Thanks

Are you referring to the rebound clamp? I've attached a couple photos of the front mount assembly. One is the diagram from the master parts catalog, and the other is on a straight eight car I have, but it's the same mount setup.

If the front mount is assembled correctly, I'd loosen the bolts, jack the engine up a little bit and and see if it centers itself, then set it back down and re-torque the bolts.

If this ends up not being the issue, we can explore some other possibilities.

Dave, this is a picture of the back side of the front motor mount (looking towards the front) is that installed right?

It looks to be correct, I believe it can only go together the one way. I've attached a couple photos of one removed from the car.

When you put all this together, did everything line up naturally? Rear mounts also? Was there any vibration at all prior to replacement of the mounts?

I think I'd loosen the bolts holding the front mount to the cross member and jack it up a little and see if it remains lined up or if binds tight against the bolts.

Also, does it vibrate at idle? only when driving or revved up? Make any difference when you push the clutch in? Have you checked the bellhousing and transmission bolts to make sure they're tight? A vibration there could travel up the column.

Is the vibration only felt in the column?

I know it's a bunch of questions, but it may give you some ideas, things to check.

Dave, at an idle it’s there a little bit, more RPM its worst, just drove it and at 35MPH its bad 40 to 50 not as bad.  There was no vibrations at all before installing the 3 mounts and the left rear was the only one that was broken.

Well, I went to loosing the front motor mount and it was not tight! So I loosen it some more and reset both rear mounts.  Took the car for a ride and it is better but not same as it was before replacing the old mounts.  The vibration at 35 mph is a lot better 40-60 not so bad, the funny thing is sometimes at the same speed it could be better and then not.  So I think I going to drive it like that and see what happens.  If you come up with anything let me know please and thanks again for you help.

You're welcome..

I'm glad to hear it's at least somewhat better for you to drive now.

The new mounts may soften some after driving it a little while also and absorb the rest of the vibration you have if it's just minor now.
